70th anniversary of the Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts
The Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2025. It has always placed Ljubljana and Slovenian art in a global context and helped shape the international discourse in the field of printmaking and contemporary art. Since its inception in 1955, the Biennale has presented works by around 9,000 artists from 122 countries. In 2001, the Biennale began commissioning new works, a significant shift from a national selection to a curated exhibition format. Since then, 245 new artworks have been produced; this year, almost all of the works on display are new productions! During this period, 30 curators and 53 exhibition venues have been involved, reflecting the ongoing development of the Biennale as a space for experimentation, critical reflection and inter-institutional collaboration.
Reader on the 70th Anniversary of the Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts
This volume is the main publication marking the Biennale's jubilee year and presents a collection of texts by local and, above all, international authors, each of whom looks at the history of one of the oldest Biennale events in the world from their own perspective. They place the Biennale in a broader theoretical context, shed light on seminal events and important personalities, and observe the changes in the development of the exhibition from 1955 to the most recent editions. In addition to the essays, the volume also contains interviews and a wealth of visual material.
Slovenian-English publication edited by Nevenka Šivavec and Gregor Dražil.
The publication will be accompanied by a one-day conference on 10 October 2025.
