Ljubljana Castle, the crown above the city, has helped shape the silhouette of the city for more than five centuries. Archaeologists have confirmed uninterrupted human occupation of the hill on which it stands from the Late Bronze Age onwards. Over the course of its rich history, the provincial castle has experienced many transformations and has witnessed numerous events that had a decisive impact on the development of Ljubljana and Slovenia. At the end of the 18th century, the Habsburgs, the then owners of the castle, intended to abandon it but because of the protests of the Carniolan Provincial Estates, fortunately they did not demolish it. Ljubljana Castle experienced another moment of brightness in 1905 when, on behalf of the city, Ljubljana mayor Ivan Hribar bought it from the state. It was destined to become a cultural centre, which came to life in full splendour at the turn of the millennium.
The “S” Gallery is a long rectangular room under the castle courtyard was created during the construction of the service blocks of Ljubljana Castle. It is used as an exhibition venue for art and photo exhibitions. The gallery provides access to a room where a water filtering system of a water cistern, whose crown stands in front of the Palatium, can be observed. Water droplets – the source of life, have been represented by Tanja Pak in her art installation.
